Introduction
Fluoride is the term used for for the ionic form of fluorine and also when it is bound to other elements. When a fluoride salt, such as sodium fluoride or sodium hexafluorosilicate is dissolved in water free fluoride ions are released. The toxicity of a fluoride salt depends on its solubility in water. The more soluble, the greater amount of fluoride ions that are released. Calcium fluoride occurs naturally in water in our area, and was given for the reason when we inquired about it, as to why artificial water fluoridation wasn't needed. Calcium fluoride is widely considered to be non toxic due to its extreme insolubility, unlike the other fluoride salts which release larges amounts of fluoride ions.
Fluoride in the form of sodium fluoride and sodium hexafluorosilicate has been used in tooth paste and in the water to help prevent tooth decay for over half a century now. They have been shown scientifically to reduce tooth decay when used topically. The problem is, fluoride which is extremely toxic when ingested, is pushed as the only solution to tooth decay.
Toxicity
On tubes of American tooth paste is a warning about fluoride.
Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately.
In fact there is actually enough fluoride in a tube of toothpaste, that if a child ate it, he or she could die.
Long term chronic exposure has been shown to cause a number of health problems, including weakening of the bones leading to increase in hip and wrist fracture. There have been a multitude of studies that showing it causes a notable reduction in IQ of children. It damages the kidneys and the thyroid gland. And lastly ingesting too much fluoride when teeth are developing causes dental fluorisis, a condition which destroys the enamel formation of teeth. According to the CDC's own data, approximately a quarter of the US population have signs of dental fluorisis, more in children. In fact dental fluorisis has become such a problem in the US, where water fluoridation is widespread, that after 50 years the government has admitted they had got it wrong and the levels in the water are too high. Dental fluorosis can be a very expensive condition to fix, perhaps this is why dental organisations are so keen on fluoride being added to the public water supply.
